Q&A:
Mr. B-wack do you perfer to go by B-wack or wacker? actually, i think mr. b-wack is great. my dad actually calls me b-wack. he and my mom moved to waco a few years ago when he was building the studio into the barn in the crowder's back yard and i think he got a little too close to the group. oh well, they all call him "don b-wack" which we all think is pretty great.
Do you consider your self a drummer then a programmer or a programmer who plays drums?
i was a drummer way before i was a computer geek. i was more into jazz back then, but always had a metal/funk/ska/grunge band on the side. when my dad got his first computer (IBM-086 running MS DOS 4) i was hooked. so intriguing. i kept trying my hand at computer music over the years but i really wasn't hooked until a friend turned me on to Reason. since then I think drumming and programming have started to blend a little for me.
Explain why you play open handed and how you think that may effect your playing / parts.
playing open handed definitely has an impact on style, fills, everything. being left hand on a right handed kit does too. i guess it puts my stronger foot on kick and keeps my stronger hand on hi hat. also, a lot of fills and beats end up different because of layout and sticking. I kind of like this.
Do you play any other instruments?
well, i can produce notes on a wide range of instruments, but i wouldn't consider myself a player of any of them. i guess I was trained in high school and college on most of the classical percussion instruments.
In your spare time do you hack into servers, read books, play basketball or think of how much you love the guys at Risen Drums?
Just the last one... and some reading.
When tracking what is your go to setup for the DCB stuff?
my "go to" setup is still a typical four piece kit and i've added a floor on my left. i have a ride over there too. i'm left handed and play open handed on a right hand kit.
On the tour buss are you a top bunk guy or a bottom bunk guy?
bottom bunk is the only way.
Do you write your parts collectively as a band or do you do it all by yourself? What's the process for you guys?
we tend to write things a lot of different ways. a lot of it depends on how the song is written. some songs are pretty figured out when they get passed around. but for the most part we come up with our parts on our own and then refine stuff when tracking. i think as bands spend more time together though, you tend to kind of predict what works and what doesn't for everyone and the process becomes smoother. sometimes this can work against you though too.
On the road what's your favorite thing to get at a gas station?
williams truck stop - coffee. pilot truck stop - diet dr. pepper. stop-n-go - hot dog. 7-eleven - butterfinger and a game of street fighter. |
